About St Michael & All Angels Church
The Church in Pirbright
The site on which St Michael & All Angels Church stands has been a place of Christian worship for at least 800 years, possibly dating back to Saxon times. The earliest recorded mention of a chapel at this location appears between A.D. 1210 and 1214, during the reign of King John. The first known incumbent, Pastor Jordan, is listed at the head of the incumbents’ board. Before the Reformation, the church was dedicated to St Michael, and in the fifteenth century, it was referred to as 'St Michael th' Archangel.' Only in modern times has the designation become St Michael and All Angels.
A History of Resilience and Change
Pirbright Church has not always been the peaceful place it is today. In 1368, the ‘Chapel of Pyrbright’ required purification after being ‘polluted with blood’ during a fatal brawl. In 1617, the curate of Pirbright, Thomas Warren, took extraordinary steps to bring absent parishioners back from alehouses during Sunday service. During the English Civil War in 1642, a minister imposed by Parliament was later removed when the monarchy was restored in 1662.
By 1783, the church had fallen into severe disrepair. The parish registers document that a couple had to marry in Worplesdon since Pirbright Church was 'out of repair.' At the time, Pirbright was a poor village, unable to afford the rebuilding costs. A meeting at the White Hart pub led to a decision to raise funds through public subscription. A significant turning point came when King George III’s coach overturned in Pirbright, and the villagers assisted him. In gratitude, he issued a petition calling for financial support from churches across England to rebuild St Michael & All Angels. The reconstruction was completed in 1785 using brick, with the Lady Chapel and tower built from locally sourced stone.
Architectural Beauty and Memorials
The 1785 reconstruction included the nave, a chancel with a Lady Chapel to the south, and a west tower. Over time, additional enhancements have been made, including the rebuilding of the porch in 1911 and the construction of a community room with modern facilities in 1992.
Inside, the church features a Gothic arch separating the nave and chancel, stained-glass windows, and a chancel ceiling completed in 1908, adorned with Christian symbols such as the sacred monogram I.H.S., the sword of St Michael, and the star of the Nativity. A brass memorial to Ross Mangles V.C., the first civilian recipient of the Victoria Cross, is displayed on the north wall, alongside a plaque commemorating Henry Morton Stanley, the famous explorer buried in the churchyard.
The west wall houses the musicians’ gallery, which originally extended along the northern wall and now accommodates a fine new organ, installed in March 2000. Beneath the gallery is a transcript of a charter from around 1210, the earliest known reference to Pirbright Church, and a photograph marking the twinning of Pirbright with Cagny, France.
The Churchyard: A Sanctuary of History and Nature
The churchyard features rare historical artifacts, including wooden grave-boards, Victorian arched brick graves, and the impressive granite tomb of Henry Morton Stanley. A weathered petition from King George III in 1785, calling for church contributions to rebuild Pirbright Church, is displayed on the south wall.
Beyond its historical significance, the churchyard is a haven for wildlife, sheltering rare species such as thrushes, bats, and stag beetles. Magnificent specimen trees and seasonal displays of snowdrops, crocus, and bluebells contribute to its serene beauty. Volunteers have worked tirelessly to restore and maintain the grounds, clearing overgrowth, planting flowers, and installing seating areas for quiet contemplation.
