Origins and Growth

Alpha began in 1977 at Holy Trinity Brompton in London as a program for exploring Christianity. In 1990, Nicky Gumbel restructured it into a course specifically designed for those unfamiliar with church, providing a welcoming space for discussions about faith through a series of talks and group conversations.

How it’s going

Today, Alpha continues to grow globally, with millions of participants in over 100 countries. The course is available in more than 100 languages, enabling people around the world to explore the Christian faith within their own communities.

A Personal Journey for Everyone

An Experience That Transforms

What makes the Alpha course truly special is that no two journeys are alike. Each person explores life’s big questions through their own lens, gaining fresh insights, forming meaningful connections, and deepening their sense of purpose. Whether you’re searching for answers, longing for community, or simply curious, Alpha meets you where you are—making every experience uniquely personal and profoundly impactful.
